Queries for 2008

The following are queries submitted to the Guilford Genealogist for the year of 2008 (Spring-Fall).

QUERY:
Henry Burkett, my 3rd ggf, is said to have been born in Guilford Co., North Carolina in 1794. Who were his parents? What was his date of birth? Did he have siblings? He married Mary Magdalene Epley (born December 1801 in Lincoln County, NC) on the 23rd of August 1819 in Greenville, Greene County, TN. Henry's parents are a big “brickwall” in our family. Many researchers have looked for them for years and nobody has been able to find any mention of them. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Also researching Burnet, Epley, Eppler, Garrett, Key, McAdams, Posey, Pringle, Pulley, Street, Youngblood.

QUERY:
My 15 year search for Brittain ancestors has led me to Guilford County. We believe that James Brittain and Mary Whitty are my wife's directline. They first settled Guilford in possibly the 1740s at Moore's Creek (allegedly). They had several identifiable children, one of which is Samuel Brittain, who was allegedly born at Bruce Cross Roads (now Township).
I have been looking for a WILL for either James or Mary, or really, ANYTHING of consequence, particularly regarding their alleged son, Daniel Brittain, who migrated with his family to East Tennessee. (I have that generation proved).

QUERY:
Records show that James W. Forbis served as Postmaster of Greensboro, 1893, and James Wiley Forbis was mayor of Greensboro, 1889-1892. Census records show James was the brother of Susan Ann Forbis Cook (who was my great-great grandmother), married to Martin Cook (my great-great grandfather). Susan and James were children of Lucinda and David Forbes (Forbes or Forbis). I have been searching for years for parents of Martin Cook, and since James Forbis was mayor, could there be some historical information on him that could provide some leads?

QUERY:
I have been searching for my 4th great grandmother born somewhere in North Carolina. Joseph Clift, my 5th great grandfather, who came from Talbot County, Maryland is listed on the Orange County 1755 tax rolls (C413). Joseph Clift was married to Mary Edgell Clift my 5th great grandmother. Joseph Clift died in 1790 and Mary Edgell Clift is listed on the 1800 Guilford County tax census.

William J. Clift was the third child of Joseph & Mary and was my 4th great grandfather and was married to (name unknown) 4th great grandmother born in North Carolina on September 3, 1781 and died August 17, 1819 in Morgan County, Tennessee. William is listed on the 1800 Guilford County tax census as head of the household with one wife and one child, Polly, left Guiford County sometime between 1800 & 1802 to reside in Morgan County, TN.

My 4th great grandmother (name unknown) died August 17, 1819 after bearing twins of which one died (Johanna Clift). William J. Clift died January 22, 1847 and is buried in Crab Orchard, Tennessee cemetery with his second wife Mary Casey Penland.

I am looking for where Joseph Clift (5th great grandfather) may be buried in Guilford County, as well as a death certificate, will, etc. I also request any information concerning my 4th great grandmother (name unknown) married to William J. Clift (1799?)--full name, birth place, birth certificate, marriage certificate, and burial place. I have strong information she may have been a Native American.

QUERY:
My ancestor, Captain Peter Summers of Guilford County, was reportedly in the First North Carolina Battalion. I assume this was a local militia, and not Continental First Line. I am interested in locating for research and verification, this fact, and review rosters of the militia, if they exist. The First NC Battalion was under General Lincoln and was part of the Army that surrendered in the Siege of Charleston in 1780.

Another fact I have about Captain Peter Summers is that he accompanied President George Washington to Guilford Courthouse Battleground when he was in the area on his Southern tour.

Can you advise if:
-Militia rosters exist for this time period;
-Where contemporary accounts of the time of President Washington's visit to the battleground are available to review?

I have reviewed the “President's Personal Diary: Southern Tour” by Joseph Hoskins, and only found reference to a group of Light Horse greeting the President's coach as it made it's way toward Salem and Salisbury.

These are family stories that I would like to “flesh out” for future generations.

All help much appreciated

QUERY:
I am seeking information on Alexander Joyce, reportedly born in 1685 in Ireland and died 5 March 1778 in Guilford County, North Carolina. This Alexander Joyce is listed in many family trees on Ancestry.com, but without any certification. I am interested in information regarding his burial place and date, where I would inquire regarding a will that might be recorded, and any other information regarding his spouse or children that is available. His spouse (second marriage) is listed as Jane Hamilton, married 19 May 1758 in Prince Edward County, Virginia.
